Lament

Sorry for the radio silence everybody, but my flat was broken into last week.  We had our laptops taken and Mr V lost his Nikon camera.  Suffice to say that blogging, apart from being impossible without camera, computer or internet access, has been the last thing on my mind.

I guess anyone out there who has suffered a burglary or had stuff stolen will know that the heartbreak of losing a personal computer is not so much the loss of the computer as what was stored on it.  My life was on that thing.  I used it for freelance work, I used it for storing photos, I used it to promote my dancing and I used it for blogging.  I can't tell you how sick with sadness I feel when I think of the years of photos I have lost on that thing and that some creep somewhere is obliterating all of them.  Precious memories of our travels, photos of me performing in Spain, photos of times spent with my family in Australia.  Now all gone.  I didn't have back ups and I am really, really angry with myself for being so idiotic.  Staggeringly the only place I have a selection of some of those photos is on this blog.

I have a couple of draft posts to share and I am aware that I owe many blogging friends a visit, but I have limited internet access at the moment and a hell of a lot of things to sort out, so I may be quieter than usual until Mr V and I get back on our feet.  Hopefully it won't be too long.

  2. Oh my God, I am so sorry to hear about this. I had my car broken into more than once in California (and nearly stolen once, I found it at midnight parked somewhere other than where I left it, with the door open and huge rock on the driver's seat!). Only sunglasses, the stereo and music was taken but it felt like such a violation. I'm sure a burglary happening where you live is much, much worse. I am so glad you have some of your pictures on your blog. I am thinking of you and Mr. V. XO, Jill

  3. Take care, Veshoevius--this sort of loss is haunting. No wonder you need time to yourself--take all the time you need. I hope you and Mr. V. discover the person who did this. Hug.

  4. I am so sorry! What a devastating and overwhelming loss. My thoughts are with you as you recover and it makes me angry that another human could be responsible for this assault.

  5. I'm so sorry...that's awful, and I know what you mean about the things you really lose when you lose a laptop. I have to get a new backup drive because my old one is simply not big enough.

Too bad they didn't just take the clothes that you were working up to getting rid of, eh? I guess that only happens in my fantasies.

  6. Oh I am so devastated for you, V. What a loss! And how I despise the bad guys. I hope you and Mr. V will be able to somehow recreate some of your favorites. Healing thoughts are sent your way.

  7. I'm so sorry this happened to you!

I wish I had some advice, but I'm afraid it would all seem futile at the moment as I'm sure you are pretty upset :(

I will give some advice, though! I know Mr. V had the Nikon D5000, which has now greatly reduced in price. I've seen them going second hand in the US for $350.

    I don't if that's helpful or comforting !

  8. I am so sorry. I know that doesn't help much, but you are in my thoughts. I cannot imagine how awful it would be to lose everything. This makes me think that I should get a backup as I have none either. We have had radios stolen from our car and it is such a hassle to get replaced. The thieves probably get $5.00 for them and it costs the victim a great deal more than that in time and money.

  9. Man, that's a hard thing to swallow. I know that my entire livelihood DEPENDS on my laptop. I do backup to my external drive from time to time, but still. A burglary like this is just such a personal violation!

  10. Oh no! My heart breaks reading this story. I've never been burglarized, but have had things stolen from me before and can sympathize. The most sickening part is knowing that whoever stole it (or whoever they sold it to) will never appreciate it the same way you do.

I hope whoever it is gets caught. I don't know how it is in the UK, but here in America when an item such as a computer, camera, etc. is stolen it's best to report it to the police asap - and provide the serial # if possible! Thieves tend to take such goods to pawn shops, but pawn shops here have to 'hold' items for 10 days so the police can check the serial #'s first, to ensure they aren't stolen.

  15. Oh, so sorry to read this! I would be devastated too. But this is a good reminder to me to buy and external drive and back up my PC pronto. Been delaying that for far too long.

Hope better days and good fortune are in your future, my dear.

  17. What a horrible, horrible feeling that your privacy has been interfered with so maliciously!!! I'm so sorry to hear of the burglary - I know what you mean about the blog pics, I too have many that are only on my blog, but due to a blown powerboard. I hope your beautiful wardrobe of sartorial treasures is intact? Big warm hugs to you Miss V. xoxox

Did you ever email anyone any of your holiday photos etc? You might find some still in the sent folder of your email account.

  19. Thank you everyone for your kind comments and for your well wishes - they have been truly heart warming. Mr V and I are still battling away doing what little we can via the internet on one old computer which is about to kick the bucket as we await a lengthy insurance claim process. So it will be some time before a full scale blogging service and an ability to visit other blogs is back up and running. In the meantime thanks for your patience and especially for your caring thoughts!

  24. I am so sorry to hear about this. I remember our house being broken into and many sentimental things being stolen when I was a kid. There's a feeling of having been violated, with your personal life being invaded by strangers. Anyway, I wish you and Mr. V the best in getting everything sorted out. xxx
